Hattiesburg USPSA Club Match Date Change

October 1, 2017 Leave a comment

As many of you will remember, the Hattiesburg USPSA Club moved it’s match date temporarily from the fourth Saturday to the third Saturday of each month back in July.  This was done in an effort to accommodate the State Championship matches that were scheduled for the fourth Sunday in Biloxi  through the month of September.  Throughout that time period, the Club received so much positive feedback and so many requests from competitors to keep the third Saturday match date that it was decided a couple of weeks ago that making the change permanent had to be given proper consideration.

The decision process involved looking at what would be best for our competitors, the Hattiesburg Club, the relevant clubs in the Mississippi section, as well as for USPSA clubs in neighboring states.  After much discussion and deliberation, the decision has been made to make the change permanent.  This conclusion was reached with the knowledge that there could/would be negative consequences for some and for that you have our true and sincere apologies.  At the end of the day,  however, it appears that the advantages of making the change will outweigh the negatives for the vast majority of those involved.  Like the man said, you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

So, I said all of that to say, we look forward to seeing you on the third Saturday of the month!  October’s match will be on the 21st and will be a great chance to warm up for the Louisiana Gator Classic that will held on October 28-29.  The remainder of the year’s matches will be updated in Practiscore shortly.

October 2017 Poplarville 3-Gun match results

The match director promised great weather in the match announcement this week, and Mother Nature delivered. While Friday and Saturday were sunny, hot and humid during setup, today was the complete opposite. The cloud cover provided relief from the direct sun and kept the temperature moderate. There was a nice breeze all morning that kept things cool for pretty much the entire match. This was our first match of fall and it pretty much felt like that (sort of). It made for a pleasant day.

The turnout was a bit light with 15 shooters making it out to the range and they were treated to four stages that weren’t overly long, tricky or hard to shoot, but they did test the shooting skills all around. Once again, we were reminded that those that can reload the shotgun fast ALWAYS do better. And it only took one stage to figure that out.

October 2017 Poplarville 3-Gun match reminder

The weather should be great this weekend for the next installment of 3-gun in Poplarville. The match date is Sunday, October 1, 2017. If you have been shooting 3-Gun in Biloxi and are bummed out at the loss of that match, consider Poplarville as an alternative. It’s definitely NOT 3 Gun Nation, but instead, traditional 3-Gun action with more challenging and sometimes long range stages. It is not a physical challenge where you have to drag dummies across the field, but you will have to move. Stages times can range from 20 to 180 seconds. It just depends on the stage. We might shoot rifles out to 300 yards, but not always. We typically don’t require you to sling long guns, but do normally stage them in barrels. If you are unsure, then check out some of the videos on YouTube. Just search for “Poplarville 3-gun”.

Cost is only $10 for SMPSA club members and $15 for non-members. If you want to know what you should bring, check it out here. Sign up now!

September 2017 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

September 24, 2017 4 comments

Today was the first time DSSA (Deep South Shooters Association) shot a match in 12 years. That club used to call the Gulfport Police Department range home for many years, right up to Hurricane Katrina. Since then, it has been dormant, but was brought back to life today to begin competitions once again. Events led to the need for a new club at Biloxi and we decided to bring back a tradition that only a small handful of shooters remember. There were just three shooters at today’s match that had ever shot a match at Gulfport with the old DSSA, and of course it was some of the seniors who have been doing this for a long time. But the best news is we are back with a new, but same old, club. We will be shooting in Biloxi for the foreseeable future and are really excited about the opportunity to host the same high quality match you have been used to for so long.

Although we just decided to do this on this past Thursday, thanks to the power of social media we were able to get a decent crowd out for the first match. And in case you are wondering who the “we” is, you can thank Gerwin Henn, Gerald Forbes and Bill Jackson for stepping up when we needed it the most. The loss of the Biloxi match would have been a big blow to the South Mississippi shooting scene. With these guys efforts and the help of many others, we avoided that possibility. Please let these guys know if you enjoyed the match today.

We ended up with 36 shooters and shot 5 stages without a classifier. Technically, today’s match was sponsored by the Poplarville club (MS10), but starting next month it will be 100% DSSA (MS11). The mix of stages seemed to go over well with the participants, although there were more than a fair share of Mikes going around. The only shooter with a clean score card was the only PCC shooter (go figure). It seemed to be all about minimizing the Mike and NS damage while maxing out on time. There were opportunities for glory, right along side of total disaster.

OK, enough of the hype, let’s see who won. On top of the heap with the Overall win was Open shooter  Read more…

September 2017 Biloxi pistol match (NEW CLUB!)

September 21, 2017 Leave a comment

Registration is now open for the first match of the Deep South Shooters Association. This will be shot at the Coast Rifle and Pistol club, the former home of the BPSA matches. The new club will shoot at the same range with the same props, but be under new management. This will be a USPSA Level I match with five stages (no classifier this time). Yes, this is short notice, and No, this isn’t a resurrection of the cancelled MS Limited State Championship match. It will be the first match for the newest club in Mississippi.

The name, Deep South Shooters Association, may sound familiar to some of you, and with good reason. This was the name of the USPSA club that shot at the Gulfport Police Dept. range by the airport for many years. That club never resumed shooting after Hurricane Katrina, but will come back to life with the same name, but at a different range. Until that is formally completed with USPSA next month, the Poplarville club will be USPSA sponsor for this match. But it will still be shot in Biloxi. Starting next month, DSSA will be a USPSA affiliated club and be the sponsor and continue the tradition of great pistol matches in Biloxi at CRPC.

September 2017 Brothers N Arms USPSA Match

September 17, 2017 2 comments

Thirty nine shooters came out for what was technically the last match of the summer at the Brothers N Arms club yesterday.  We got off to a bit of a foggy start, but before long the sun came out and let us know that it is, indeed, still summer, no matter what the calendar might say.  The six stages moved along nicely with a good round count, a fair amount of steel, and lots of movement.  Many thanks to our Match Director, Cliff Gaddis, for the hard work he puts into both the selection and setting up of our stages each month!

Limited was our largest division by a good margin and had four of the top five shooters in it’s ranks, including the top competitor overall, Read more…

BPSA events suspended indefinitely.

September 15, 2017 2 comments

Greetings shooters!

Despite numerous attempts and good faith negotiations on my part, I’ve been unable to reach an agreement with our host range (CRPC) to continue operating matches at their facility, and as of now all BPSA events have been suspended indefinitely.

This means tomorrow’s 3gn team event is cancelled, as well as next weekend’s limited state championship.

I’ll be contacting competitors to issue refunds over the weekend.

Thanks to all of you for the many years of support and hard work you’ve given to help make BPSA possible, it has truly been a humbling and very rewarding experience to be a part of, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

I’d also like to wish CRPC and the newly formed incoming USPSA club the best in moving forward.

Despite our inability to reach an agreement, I certainly hold no animosity and look forward to continuing to participate in CRPC matches as both a member and participant going forward.

There are a lot of great folks in our area and I’m confident they will be able to continue building on the foundation I’ve built there and hopefully bring it to even further heights.

I tell my guys all the time that no one is irreplaceable, including myself. I’m sure CRPC matches will be in good hands.

As for the future of BPSA, this is just as much a shock to me as it is to you, and while I am exploring options with other facilities, as well as potentially opening our own facility, nothing is certain as of yet, nor do I expect anything to happen very soon. As always, I will keep you updated as I find out.

Again, I’d like to thank CRPC for being gracious hosts to BPSA for the past five years, it has been an incredible experience, and I wish everyone the best moving forward.

See you at the next match!

September 2017 Poplarville pistol match results

September 10, 2017 Leave a comment

Dawson PrecisionSummer may not be officially over, but it sure seemed that way today. The weather was downright pleasant and was not a factor at all. We tried something a bit new with the stages and it seemed to work out well. We shot 7 stages that ranged from 12 to 26 rounds. There were no big monster stages with super high round counts and two digit hit factors, but with three squads (32 shooters), things moved along well. None of the squads had to wait for the squad ahead of them, ever. The first squad finished all 7 stages slightly before Noon, and the last squad was done only about 15-20 minutes after that. Heck, the range was cleaned up and completely vacant by 1 PM. And everyone seemed to enjoy the mix of stages.

Since the Mississippi State Limited Championship match is just two weeks away, there were a lot of regular non-Limited shooters shooting in Limited for the practice. And because of this reason, there were more in Limited than all other divisions combined. When the numbers were tabulated, it was a Limited shooter standing at the top of the podium. Congratulations to Read more…
