June 2020 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

It seemed like we had been off for a year, but it was only 4 months. The successful return to shooting in Biloxi was marked by some pretty challenging stages and difficult shots. Maybe it was just that we had all been out of action for so long, or maybe it was the G-Man just saying, “Welcome Back!”

Whatever it was, I have been trying to think of the correct adjectives to describe it since I got home. Lots of things came to mind, but I finally settled on “challenging” and “HOT!” The weather certainly played an important role today with the heat/humidity combo making for an uncomfortable day. When I got up at 5 AM, my outdoor thermometer said 80 degrees and 86% humidity. Just what I wanted to see at 5 AM. But everyone survived, some maybe a bit worse for the wear.

There were 52 shooters competing today over 5 demanding stages. Only two shooters made it through without a single penalty on their card and one of them also shot the fastest. While he claimed not to have even touched his gun while we were on hiatus, Roger Henn was in top form winning the Open and Overall titles today. In Carry Optics, Kevin Leonhardt easily took the top spot and was helped by a 104.6% classifier (yes, it was numerically higher than 100%). It was Jason Welch taking the Limited title and Robert Torres cruising to the win in Production. Don Albares won over in PCC and David Pape rounded out the winners column in Single Stack. Maybe it was too much for the first match back, but then again, life in general hasn’t been easy lately.

We greatly appreciate everyone coming out to share the return to fun in Biloxi. We had good help in getting things put away (thank you) and were out of there in near record time, even with the heat. We can’t promise cooler weather next month, but we can guarantee more challenging stages. Thank you for your support.

February 2020 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

After being off for two months, it felt good to be back on the range again in Biloxi. It was a classifier match today and we got to shoot the four new USPSA classifiers that were recently released, plus an oldie from 1999. They all had required movement, no mandatory reloads, and no strong or weak hand shooting. Each was just a small field course. They were fun, but challenging. The new direction USPSA has taken with classifiers is a welcome change from the somewhat tired stand, shoot, reload, shoot type of stages that we have endured for so many years. The older ones tested many skills necessary to be successful, but often seemed to emphasize draws and reloads more than just moving and shooting. The more recent classifiers that have been tested at the two previous Nationals events are just like any 12-14 round stage you would see at a local match. They are harder to set up correctly, but they are definitely worth the effort.

It was barely above freezing when the setup team started arriving at the range this morning, but by the time we started, it had warmed up nicely and ended up being a really nice day. Since the minimum round count for the 5 classifiers was only 62, the match was done in record time with the final squad finishing around 11:30. We were packed up and ready to go before Noon.

With so many classifiers in one match, lots of folks took advantage of the chance to get a classification in a new division. Almost half of the shooters shot as U class today, and most will end up with their first classification for the particular division they chose. The others, well, they were hell bent on “movin’ on up” to the next level. I don’t know yet if anyone was able to improve their current ranking, as these stages were fairly challenging to shoot for a high score. With the High Hit Factors indicating that most shooters needed mid-single digit times to even be in the hunt for a good score, it was imperative to do everything sooner. Even a second was costly to your score today.

It should come with little surprise that today’s match winner was a local known for his nimble feet and lightning trigger finger. Congratulations to Read more…

January 2020 Biloxi USPSA pistol match – *WEATHER UPDATE*

January 25, 2020 Leave a comment

It looks like rain for tomorrow, but we are going to wait until the morning to make a final decision. Everyone registered in Practiscore will receive an email no later than 6 AM with either:

Yes, we are shooting

or

No, we cancelled.

If you are traveling from a long ways away, please wait for the email. If we get to shoot, then you can leave then and we will guarantee you will get to shoot when you arrive.

If it still looks like rain, we will cancel, because shooting 5 classifiers in sloppy conditions is not fair to you. However, the weatherman is occasionally wrong, so we are holding out hope the rain misses us.

So, you will get an email by 6 am on Sunday morning, either saying we ARE shooting or ARE NOT shooting.

Thanks for your support, everyone.

January 2020 Biloxi USPSA pistol match – Registration open *UPDATE*

January 22, 2020 Leave a comment

Registration is open and slots are still available for this month’s USPSA match, presented by the Deep South Shooters Association. The match will take place at the Coast Rifle and Pistol Club in Biloxi on January 26, 2020. Shooting begins at 9 AM. Please arrive no later than 8:30 AM to check in and pay, but earlier is always better.

NOTE: USPSA has released 4 new classifiers for this year, which were developed and tested at the 2019 Nationals. Unless you shot the Hi-Cap or Lo-Cap Nationals in 2019, you haven’t shot these yet. We will do all four of the new ones, plus one from the oldies but goodies files.

The new ones are really just small field courses. They all feature movement, none have required magazine changes (unless you actually run out of rounds in a lo-cap division) and none have a strong hand or weak hand requirement. If you want a look at them, they can be found at the USPSA web page.

We will shoot at least one more classifier, possibly 2 more. They will be chosen from ones that also DO NOT require strong hand/weak hand shooting, and do have movement, if at all possible.

If you shoot this match in a new division to you, you will get a classification from this one match. Juniors shoot for free, CPRC members shoot for $15, all others shoot for $20.
