September 2017 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

Today was the first time DSSA (Deep South Shooters Association) shot a match in 12 years. That club used to call the Gulfport Police Department range home for many years, right up to Hurricane Katrina. Since then, it has been dormant, but was brought back to life today to begin competitions once again. Events led to the need for a new club at Biloxi and we decided to bring back a tradition that only a small handful of shooters remember. There were just three shooters at today’s match that had ever shot a match at Gulfport with the old DSSA, and of course it was some of the seniors who have been doing this for a long time. But the best news is we are back with a new, but same old, club. We will be shooting in Biloxi for the foreseeable future and are really excited about the opportunity to host the same high quality match you have been used to for so long.

Although we just decided to do this on this past Thursday, thanks to the power of social media we were able to get a decent crowd out for the first match. And in case you are wondering who the “we” is, you can thank Gerwin Henn, Gerald Forbes and Bill Jackson for stepping up when we needed it the most. The loss of the Biloxi match would have been a big blow to the South Mississippi shooting scene. With these guys efforts and the help of many others, we avoided that possibility. Please let these guys know if you enjoyed the match today.

We ended up with 36 shooters and shot 5 stages without a classifier. Technically, today’s match was sponsored by the Poplarville club (MS10), but starting next month it will be 100% DSSA (MS11). The mix of stages seemed to go over well with the participants, although there were more than a fair share of Mikes going around. The only shooter with a clean score card was the only PCC shooter (go figure). It seemed to be all about minimizing the Mike and NS damage while maxing out on time. There were opportunities for glory, right along side of total disaster.

OK, enough of the hype, let’s see who won. On top of the heap with the Overall win was Open shooter John Nguyen, who won by 8.5%. The Limited division saw a very competitive field today with Gerwin Henn coming out on the top of that list. Blayne Dupuy took home another division win in Carry Optics (8th overall). Today’s match was anything but Production friendly but Jason Welch was still able to meet the challenge and win the reloading battle. The ever reliable Gerald Benton won the PCC division without any reloads. And, last but not least, Karen Hooper was the winner in the Single Stack division. Congratulations to these winners, and thank you to everyone for coming out today.

**When looking for today’s scores on the Practiscore web site, use the search term “DSSA”. When looking on the USPSA web site, search the club code MS10. In the future, matches on the USPSA site will be under MS11**

A big round to thanks goes to the new match team, along with the folks that helped with setup yesterday. The new club has the full support of the Coast Rifle and Pistol Club board, so you can expect even better matches in the future as this new team gets more experience under their belts. And finally, we thank the BPSA team for creating an environment that made it easy for the new team to be successful.

Our next match will be held on October  22nd, just one week before the Gator Classic, so that will be the last best chance for practice under match conditions. Mark your calendars now. And don’t forget the Poplarville and Hattiesburg matches for your major match practice in October, as well.

Will DSSA assume the 4th Sunday slot at GCRPC that BPSA vacated?

      Yes, that is the plan!

Didn’t like hearing gerwin or gerald bashing Bpsa or mosher. They don’t have to do that to build their own successful match.

Where are you hearing this bashing? Certainly not on this site.
