2016 MS CQB Rifle Championship Results!

August 28, 2016 1 comment

The 2016 Mississippi CQB Rifle Championship is in the books, and we certainly hope everyone who came out and competed enjoyed themselves. We had a record high 86 competitors turn out today, and everything ran incredibly smooth.

Despite the torrential thunderstorms all around us, we somehow managed to avoid the rain, which was amazingly lucky. It must be all that good karma we’ve built up the past few months!

Now on to the action:

Stage 1 was the shortest of the match, a 22 round, “r” shaped layout that gave shooters the option of engaging the right side array through the port and running around the front to finish, or taking the left side first and backing up to finish in the port.

Drew Walters chose the latter option, and just obliterated the stage with a time of 11.06, besting even the Rimfire shooters.

Stage 2 was the most target rich stage, a 36 round in a large “E” layout turned on its side. Shooters had several ports to use as options, and it appeared most shooters opted to run around the front of the stage to finish on the opposite side.

The plan Bryant Willett chose to run proved to be the best by far, as he finished 1st and 2nd here with his Rimfire and Rifle entry, a good two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Stage 3 was a 30 round layout that had you moving down range and engaging target from a few different positions. There was one particular double target partially obstructed by a board, and Thomas Knight was the only shooter we saw that chose to nearly kneel to shoot the lower one from the start position, and that proved to be the winning strategy on that stage as he took the stage win by almost a full second.

Stage 4 was another 30 rounder, this one broken up by three walls creating four different shooting positions that really only left shooters with two viable plans to run the stage. Christopher Dimenna picked the right option and threw down a smoking 12.52 for the stage win.

Stage 5 covered the most real estate, setup in a large inverted “L” layout. Shooting on the move on the left side array was the recipe for magic on this stage, and both Roger Henn and Ivan Deroche laid down times in the 17 second range, with Steven Mosher putting up a 16 second run in Rimfire.

Overall Results:

State Champion Rifle: Roger Henn
1st place Rifle: Roger Henn
2nd place Rifle: Kevin Leonhardt
3rd place Rifle: David Martian

High Super Senior Rifle: Lee Frasier
High Senior Rifle: John Huber
High Lady Rifle: Michele White

RRA Rifle Drawing Winner: Kevin Leonhardt

Burris MTAC Scope Drawing Winner: Herman Cox

We’d also like to thank everyone that helped setup the match, for without you none of it would be possible. Lee Frasier, Kyle Watkins, Bryant Willett, Ken Hablitzel, Harry Williams, Gerwin Henn, Roger Henn, and Gerald Forbes. If you see these guys them a big high five!

Big thanks to everyone who came out and shot the match, ran timers, scored nooks, and pasted targets. It really is a team effort. Thanks to AM squads for hanging fresh targets and PM squads for tearing down.

We’re also extremely thankful to our host range CRPC, for sponsoring all active duty and retired law enforcement to shoot all BPSA events free though 2016!

Look forward to doing it again next August, and stay tuned for similar BPSA events this October, and throughout 2017!

August Brothers N Arms USPSA Pistol Match Results

August 27, 2016 Leave a comment

The weather was great at the range today, with the temperatures relenting somewhat.  We had 43 shooters from three states come out for the Brothers N Arms Special Classifier Match this morning.  The stages moved along nicely, with most shooters being finished around noon.  As always, thank you to all for the help breaking down afterwards!

Thomas Knight was the overall winner as well as the top shooter in the Limited Division.  John Nguyen was a close second overall and the winner in the Open Division.  Jason Welch was number one in Production and Chris Brown was the decisive winner in Single Stack.  Complete scores can be found here on Practiscore or here on the USPSA site.

Several shooters today did not have their USPSA Member number yet.  If you were one of those, please forward it to me as soon as you receive it to ensure that USPSA will accept your scores from today’s match towards your initial classification.  Finally, the issue with the May Classifier score appears to have been rectified by USPSA.  If anyone is still having problems, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. BPSA August 2016 3-gun Results!

August 20, 2016 Leave a comment

We had 19 shooters come out to the monthly 3gun match today. We started off in the heat, and about halfway through we had a 40 minute heavy rain delay that cooled things off and we finished the match running around in the mud.

Stage 1 was on the rifle range, and was setup similar to a steel challenge stage, requiring 5 strings at 5 plates offhand at 100 yards. Everyone agreed this was about two strings too much, and it will be the first and last time we do five strings.

Due to the number of strings and length it took to complete this stage, it was make or break for where everyone finished in the overall results due to the other stages being relatively short. The guys shooting limited with no magnification really had it rough on this one.

Steven Mosher took the stage with multiple 7 second string runs on the way to a 40 second overall stage time, gaining him 22+ seconds on those behind him.

Stage 2 and 3 were short quick stages with 6-7 paper each and 8 steel that you had your choice of two guns. For squad 3, the popular choice seemed to be rifle/shotgun on stage 2 and then pistol/shotgun for stage 3. The guys at the top of stage 2 were coming in around 15-18 seconds, led by stage winner Kevin Leonhardt with a time of 15.19. On stage 3 we had four guys throw down times in the 12 second range, led by stage winner Ethan Boudreaux with a blazing 12.16 run.

Stage 4 used all three guns, and rewarded those who could either shoot well on the move, or move really well between the shooting. It required 9 paper to be engage with rifle, the tougher of those headshots at 20+ yards. The shotgun portion had 7 steel plates only 3 inch in diameter and around 10 yards, which turned out to be tricky for a few folks who had open chokes. The pistol portion consisted of 6 large poppers, and one small one tucked behind a barrel that required you to move the length of the bay to engage it. The engagement order preferred by most of squad 3 was to start with rifle first, then move to shotgun and finish out with pistol. Several chose to engage the closer rifle targets while moving, and a few even chose to do the same with shotgun, although the consensus afterwards was that engaging the smaller shotgun targets while posted up was the better choice. The stage winner here again was Kevin Leonhardt who put about 8 seconds distance between himself and the rest of the field, and if not for some difficulty on stage 1 could have ran away with today’s match as he had a very strong showing in the other three stages.

As it was, the overall and tactical division winner today was Steven Mosher, bolstered by the 22 second cushion he built up on stage 1.

Steve White topped the field in Open division, with his stage wins in open on both stage 1 & 3 gaining him nearly 10 seconds of separation from the his fellow open shooters.

David Martian took top honors in Limited division, besting the rest of the limited field by over 50 seconds, most of it on his work on stage 1 winning it by a huge margin, and then his consistency in staying a close 2nd in limited on the other three stages.

Thanks to everyone who came out to shoot, helped setup, and helped with tear down. Also appreciate everyone’s patience with the rain and trudging in the mud afterwards. Any mud you happened to take home today you are welcome to keep.
