Another August, another hot day. Despite the occasional clouds and eventual rain, it was hot today! And in some cases, that applied to the shooting as well. There were some stellar performances, and then there were the ones where you just want to hit the delete button.

We had a good turnout with 20 shooters competing. We had one new shooter to the club today who managed to walk away with a division win as well. The 5 stages were just about the right amount of challenge to be easy to set and score but challenging enough to make you think. In the end, the results may surprise some. Our overall winner today was… Read more…

July 2013 Poplarville pistol match results

You never would have guessed it from the weather at the start of the weekend, but today’s match was actually pretty good. Apparently, the rain missed the range on Friday and Saturday and the road in was dry and caused no problems this month. For a July in South Mississippi, it was almost bearable. We had a great turnout with 27 shooters competing on 5 stages of fire. We had several new shooters today and we welcome them and hope they will come back again.

If you viewed the results at the range, please note there have been some changes. The PractiScore application didn’t handle the classifier properly and was counting Mikes for every no penalty miss. I was able to correct this by hand in EZ-WinScore, so the scores did change and I am positive they are correct as shown here. The numbers in the raw data input for Stage 1 were right in the Nooks but the total score for the stage was not done right so the final scores at the range were not accurate. The ones posted here are accurate.

**UPDATE** 7:00 AM Sunday morning.

The road in is dry and easily passable. The match is on!

Tomorrow is the monthly USPSA pistol match on Poplarville. Please check back in the morning before coming to the range for an update on the range road. Last month, we had issues and it is possible again. I will be at the range by 7 AM and provide an update on the road. If you have 4-wheel drive, you might want to bring it.

Once again, the weather was iffy in the early morning, prompting a few phone calls and emails. But, in the end, we had a great day of shooting. The rain held off until well after the match was over and packed up, and it was partly cloudy most of the time so it wasn’t too hot, too often. The only real issue we had was with the road up the hill. One poor car slid off the side and had to be pulled out. The omnipresent white van of fun didn’t even make the attempt (smart move, Bob!).

We had 15 shooters make the trip today and while we only shot 4 stages, we still had a great match.  Our match winner was … Read more…

May 2013 Poplarville pistol match results

On Friday, it wasn’t looking good. On Saturday, we almost called it off. And then on Sunday, we were rewarded for our patience. The start of the weekend washed out the Biloxi match so we lost some valuable last-minute practice for the Classic. But we got our match in and actually had a good day. The weather was great, with mild temperatures and mostly overcast skies. We had a decent turnout with 16 shooters coming out. We had one new (to us) shooter and the rest were, as they say, grizzled veterans.

With 5 stages and 138 minimum shots, we got that valuable trigger time. Wayne went a little crazy and managed to set a 40 round monster which really emphasized movement and accuracy. In the end, it was the man with the dot on top taking the top spot. Our match winner was  Read more…

As of Saturday evening around 5 PM, the Poplarville match is still on for Sunday. It looks like the rain may be over, and it is sunny at the range right now. If we don’t get any more rain, then we should be OK. Please check back here no later than 6:30 AM for any changes. If we haven’t cancelled by 6:30 AM, then we will be shooting.

In case you didn’t read the match story from last month, the club voted to increase the match fee from $13 to $15 for members and $18 to $20 for non-members. Annual memberships go from $25 to $35 per year. This is due to increases in our rent and insurance expenses.

We hope our shooters understand our need to raise the fees. It certainly isn’t the best time with the cost of gas at an all-time high, ammo either outrageously overpriced or just plain unavailable, but we just don’t have a choice. We need an average of 14 shooters every month just to break even , so everything is working against us. But we remain confident that we offer one of the most unique shooting experiences anywhere in the South.

Also, the gate is now locked again. When you renew your membership ask for a new key if you want to use the range on non-match days.

April 2013 Poplarville 3-Gun match results

For such a nice day, it seemed no one wanted to shoot or could afford to. We only had 6 shooters make it out today, but that did not mean the match wasn’t top-notch. We shot four great stages, from quick quick quick, to long-range rifle with shotgun as a warm-up. You needed to be consistent today to score well and number one in consistent was… Read more…

It seems like we are always facing some challenge when we shoot in Poplarville. Today, the wind that was the culprit. It blew at 15-25 mph pretty much all day and made the idea of moving targets too much of a reality. Steel fell, paper target stands toppled and reshoots were issued, but in the end, we got it done. We had a great turnout, with 21 shooters entering the fray. Our 5 stages tested the shooter’s skills in many ways. There was ample opportunity to excel, yet many took the challenge to new lows. But someone always has to win and today, that winner was… Read more…
