November 2018 Brothers N Arms USPSA Pistol Match

November 17, 2018 Leave a comment

What started out as a brisk morning warmed up before the first shots. The weather turned out to be quite nice pretty much the whole day as most shooters shed the warm layers quicker than a JJ Racaza double tap. Forty shooters competed on six great stages, with big rounds counts abounding. Not exactly Gator style hosing, nor Nationals style technical shooting but a good mix of fast and slow shooting with just enough movement to keep it interesting.

When the last shots were fired and the scores synced, it was  Read more…

November 2018 Poplarville 3-Gun match results

Once again, a nice day was missed by many of the regulars. There were only 11 shooters today, but they enjoyed some interesting, and different stages. It’s tough coming up with something different each month, but somehow, it seems to work every time. There was something for everybody on at least one of their stages. The weather also cooperated and made for a great day, environmentally. The cloud cover kept the temperature at bay and it was kind of Goldilocks all day long (not to hot, not too cold, …).

With Kevin shooting the Voodoo on the Bayou 3-Gun match, the top spot was just waiting for a new face. The face that actually showed up wasn’t exactly new to the winner’s circle, but he hasn’t been there too much recently. Back on top of the heap with a consistent performance all day was  Read more…

October 2018 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

For a change, the weather was NOT threatening, nor was it too hot. It turned out to be a great day, weather-wise. This seemed to bring everyone out to play. In addition, Limited division was up for grabs as the three local Limited shooters who normally vie for top spot were all at Limited Nationals this weekend.

Thanks to the 2018 USPSA Optics Nationals experience that Roger Henn, George Miller and Bill Jackson gained in Frostproof, FL this past weekend, 68 shooters were treated to some of the stages they shot there. Stage 1, the “next-year” classifier proved to be as difficult as it did at Nationals. You just can’t miss fast enough to score well, even though many tried. The PCC guys ruled this stage. Stages 4 and 5 were as close to the Nationals versions as we could make them, and they performed similarly to the Nationals. They were challenging, but fair. A good test of your basic skills. The rest of the new classifiers coming won’t be any easier than stage 1, so get ready!

With the big turnout, the match moved along pretty well. With the nice weather, it made for a pleasant morning, as long as you were shooting well. Heck, it was still nice even with a miss here or there! But there is always one person who seems to get it all together. Today that person was  Read more…

80% of Open shooters aren’t as good as they think!

Local shooters George Miller, Roger Henn and I competed at the USPSA Optics Nationals in Florida in the Open division this past weekend (Sat-Mon). We found tough, but fair stages that really tested our fundamental skills. There was a mix of standards courses with lots of reloads (Open shooters aren’t supposed to have to reload that much) and strong and weak hand shooting, medium courses where you needed to move quickly though the targets and be as accurate as possible, and a healthy dose of field courses with significant movement and lots of long distance targets (hence, the OPTICS part…). Targets occasionally sported some sort of cover, of both the hard and no-shoot variety. There were also swingers and bobbers mixed in for good measure. But none of what we saw was brand new.

While I had set my expectations on just shooting my current level of skill, Read more…

October Brothers N Arms USPSA Pistol Match

Dense fog gave some of our shooters with longer drives issues, and there was a very slight sprinkle towards the end of the match, but other than that, the day’s weather was relatively mild i.e. warm and doggone humid.  Forty-one competitors took advantage of it and enjoyed five challenging stages plus a classifier that that I think no one hopes shows up again anytime soon.  Kudos once again to Justin Green for some very fun stages that were a great combination of movement and strategy.   As always, thanks for all of the help with set up and breakdown, especially those folks that were there at 7 am.  You know who you are!

The top five spots were closely contested by largely the same 5 competitors, with the day’s top two shooters trading number one on almost every stage like a couple of prize fighters going toe to toe.  When the smoke cleared though, the top dog both overall and in Open, but by only slightly more than two percent, was  Read more…
