March 2012 SMPSA pistol match results

March 11, 2012 4 comments

Congratulations to the 22 shooters we had today. The match came off without any major hitches, and the weather was reasonably cooperative. It was alternately sunny, then cloudy, and always breezy, but thanks to a new stock of old brake rotors courtesy of Wayne, stands blowing over wasn’t an issue. One squad shot so hard that they broke two small poppers off their bases. In reality, the poppers were pretty much worn out and just died. We had one unfortunate disqualification, though.

The scores were recorded pretty well, too. There were a few math errors (easily fixed) and a couple of shooters who forgot to number their score sheets or numbered them wrong, but no missing times or shot counts coming up short. When the smoke cleared, and the results computed, there was a surprising winner at the top.

March 2012 3-gun match alternate scoring

March 5, 2012 Leave a comment

Since quite a few shooters thought the last stage of the March match had been cancelled, the official scores show a four-stage match. However, if we were to drop the last stage (unofficially), then the scores would look a bit different. The winner would still be Bryant, but the rest of the order would change. The scores here are totally unofficial, but just reflect the three stages that everyone shot.

March 2012 SMPSA 3-gun match results (**Updated**)

**Results updated** Mike Christensen’s score for the hilltop stage was corrected, because of a scoring error he wasn’t given credit for hitting the bonus target. This affected the overall scores. It has been corrected and the new results posted.

Great weather produced a great turnout. We had 22 shooters today, which is a high for quite some time. Thanks to all the shooters that came out today to shoot some really challenging stages. The hilltop proved to be a challenge to over half the shooters, who timed out and were unable to complete the course. Long distances are challenging enough, without the spring loaded platform. It actually appeared quite challenging, but if you didn’t rush, it wasn’t all that bad. Many shooters succumb to the lure of the bonus 500 yard shot. If you hit it, you scored a 25 second deduction to your stage time, but far too many competitors spent way more than the 25 seconds banging shot after shot after shot at that really small target. It ended up costing them big time. Read more…

The Poplarville club will hold the monthly 3-gun match on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the range in Poplarville at 9:00 AM. The weather should cooperate so brings lots of ammo! Rumor has it the long-range rifle targets will make an appearance. If you don’t know where your long gun shoots at 400+ yards, figure it out or bring even more ammo.

February 2012 SMPSA rifle match results

The rifle match was a quickie today, because we had just 5 shooters. We shot three of the pistol stages from the USPSA match (minus the steel) and were done in probably 30 minutes. Our match winner was Wayne Alcock, mostly due to his quick work in the pistol classifier (and the fact that he shot a major gun).

The results are here.

The match scores have been updated to reflect a mistake in the classifier score for Bo Gray. The match results did not change in Production division, but the percentages did.

If you wussed out and didn’t show up because it was “too cold”, you should be ashamed. It was a bit breezy, but by the time the Sun came up, it had warmed up to almost 40° and by the time the match ended, it was 50°. We did have 17 shooters who did think it would be worth it and we had a great match. We shot 5 stages, with lots of steel and the new MGM Whirly-Gig target (aka: Texas Star).

Things went pretty smoothly with no real hiccups in the stages or the scores. There were no bottlenecks or DQ’s. So, it was a great day. Let’s get to the results. Read more…

The results are in! We had 13 shooters today (on SuperBowl Sunday) competing over 4 tough stages. The weather was a bit iffy in the morning, and the drive up the hill was a challenge for the early birds, but everyone made it in OK. It ended up a pretty nice day, weather-wise, too.

Before the scores, a brief explanation of the scoring. Each stage is scored by raw time plus penalty time. The shooter with the lowest total time is awarded 100 stage points. Every other shooter earns a percentage of the 100 points based on their performance, compared to the top shooter. The shooter’s total time is divided into the top shooter’s total time to get a percentage of the total available points.

The results aren’t too much of a surprise, but it was close. Read more…

January 2012 SMPSA Shotgun match results

The results for the shotgun have been posted. We had 6 shooters hang around for the scattergun fun, and we shot 3 decent stages of fun. Today was birdshot and slugs. Once again, if you can load your shotgun rapidly, you do well.

The match winner was Cameron Thompson by over 14 seconds. But, best of all, two of the new pistol shooters also stuck around to shoot shotgun as well. Thanks, guys!

The final scores are posted here.

January 2012 SMPSA pistol match results (**Updated**)

The scores have been edited and updated to reflect Cameron shooting Minor. He was originally scored as Major. He still won Limited, though. Sorry folks, it was a long day.

The pistol results are in (finally)! But, they are subject to the following. The score sheet for Nick Saucier for Stage 3 was messed up. It is incomplete and unusable, so it hasn’t been included in the scores. Nick shot Limited, and shot well, but the loss of all the points from a stage certainly affected the Limited scores. He wouldn’t have won, but he might have moved up one spot. Nevertheless, the rest of the scores were respectable. (Update: Nick’s score sheet for stage 3 has been deciphered. His scores are now correct, along with the rest of the match scores).

We had 15 shooters for the first match of the year, which is decent, but not great. We did have three brand new shooters with us today (Gus, Reed and Tony). They did great, especially for new shooters. They shot safely and displayed excellent pistol handling skills. If they continue to shoot, their times will no doubt improve. Thanks for coming out, guys. I hope you come back next month. Read more…
