South Mississippi Practical Shooting

Dense fog gave some of our shooters with longer drives issues, and there was a very slight sprinkle towards the end of the match, but other than that, the day’s weather was relatively mild i.e. warm and doggone humid.  Forty-one competitors took advantage of it and enjoyed five challenging stages plus a classifier that that I think no one hopes shows up again anytime soon.  Kudos once again to Justin Green for some very fun stages that were a great combination of movement and strategy.   As always, thanks for all of the help with set up and breakdown, especially those folks that were there at 7 am.  You know who you are!

Registration is open for the October USPSA Pistol Match at the Brothers N Arms Range in Hattiesburg  this Saturday, October 20th. We will have six stages including a classifier.

Primary setup will take place this Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.  If you are available to help, please reach out to Justin Greene with Brothers N Arms for details.  Final setup starts at 7:00 am Saturday morning and all hands are welcome to help speed up the process.  Registration/check-in ends at 8:30 am.  No walk-ons after 8:30, no exceptions.  There will be a new shooters meeting at 8:30 and a mandatory safety meeting at 8:45. The match starts promptly at 9:00 am.

Fall doesn’t officially start until September 23, and you could certainly tell by the temperature at today’s match!  Forty folks braved heat indexes over 100 degrees to come out to shoot six fun and challenging stages.  Hats off to Justin Green for once again putting together a great mix of stages.  Thanks also to everyone that helped with setup and tear down, none of this would happen without you!  On to the scores.

Well, like the man said, sometimes you just get lucky.  The morning in Hattiesburg was foggy and over cast.  Thunderstorms in other parts of south Mississippi caused some shooters to withdraw (you know who ya’ll are…I think you just wanted an excuse to stay in bed).  Less than an hour after the match was over, the rain began in Hattiesburg and continues even as I write this.  Today’s special classifier match, however, went off without a hitch from the weather, a rarity this year for the clubs in our area.

We had 45 guns at the range today to shoot six fairly challenging Classifiers.  Things moved quickly, both during the match and with breakdown.  This type of match is quick to shoot, but takes extra effort to set up correctly, so many, many thanks for the help with setup this morning.

Having received a few questions about the weather, I thought I would let everyone know that tomorrow’s match is still on.   Should we get heavy weather overnight or if the forecast for tomorrow morning should change for the worse, we will do our best to send out a notification via this blog by 6:00 am tomorrow morning.  The range has received no rain to speak of and is in great shape.  In the event that it does rain after the match has started, we will shoot as long as pasters will stick to the targets and as long as it is safe.  Like the man said, scared money don’t win! If you are a current member of the Brothers N Arms USPSA Chapter, your membership will be up for renewal next month.  If you’re not a member of the chapter, this is your chance to become one for the next 12 months.  Paying a $25 annual membership fee will reduce your match fee from $20 to $15.  If you’re going to shoot this match more than 5 times over the next year, it’s a no-brainer – just bring a total of $40 to next month’s match, $25 to join or renew and $15 for the match fee.  See you at the match!

This month’s will be a “Special All Classifier” match where we plan to have six classifier stages.  This will give new shooters a chance to get a classification all in one day.  If you’re an experienced shooter looking to get a classification in a new division or to move up in your current division, this is a great chance to do so without having to shoot six matches.

Well, we finally caught a break with the weather!  The rain we received earlier in the week was not enough to ruin the range conditions and, while it was still a hot day, overcast skies and a decent breeze kept it very bearable.  We had 40 shooters in attendance to shoot five fast-paced stages, including a deceptively difficult classifier that seemed to give a lot of folks trouble (including me!).  Thanks to all of the outstanding help with setup and teardown, most everyone was finished up before noon.  We can’t tell you how much your efforts are appreciated!

Today’s “burn ’em down” type stages definitely favored the Open shooters, with the top four spots going to that division.  At the end of the day, however, there was one very clear winner. Read more…
