February 2019 Poplarville 3-Gun match results

February is always an iffy month, weather-wise. Today, we lucked out and got a really pleasant day for 3-gun. By the end of the match it was in the low 70’s and the sun was out. And that made for some fun stages for the 16 shooters in the match.

The four stages looked straightforward, but proved more challenging than expected. We finally got to shoot some long-range rifle at the beginning of a stage, which meant there was no excuse accepted along the lines of being out of breath. This helped quite a few people with their hits on the long steel. On that stage, there were also paper pistol targets out to 50 yards.

It seemed like everyone enjoyed the stages and we had two brand-new to 3-gun shooters with us today. In fact, at 10 am, yesterday morning, we only had 10 people registered. By this morning, there were 16. Word must have gotten out about the fantastic stages…

The NFL seems to always schedule the Super Bowl the afternoon of the February 3-Gun in Poplarville, and this year is no exception. Whether you are a Patriots fan (not much of a chance down here) or a Rams fan (OK, well that’s not happening, at least this year) it doesn’t matter, as long as you are a 3-gun fan. The match is scheduled for Sunday, February 3, 2019 at 9 AM at the range on Poplarville. And yes, we will be done in time for you to get home for the game.

January 2019 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

As I sit down to write this, the Sun is shining, the temperature is moderate and it appears to be a very nice afternoon. My only question is, where the heck was this weather this morning?! We should be thankful it wasn’t raining, and it wasn’t below freezing, but for the entire match, it was very cool and overcast and it wasn’t one of those days you relish being outside. It tried to warm up during the match, but it never quite got there. The Sun tried to break through, but it never did. I suppose it could have been worse, so I’ll quit complaining now.

It was a fun match today, with relative low round count stages and an inversely high level of difficulty. How hard, you ask? Well, the overall match winner was the only one to shoot the match clean (no Mikes or No-shoots). If fact, only two shooters had no Mikes for the whole match. There were no scores showing a hit factor of 10 or higher, and most were significantly below that mark (i.e. no hoser stages today) . It was a lot of shoot, move, shoot, move, and so on. The stages were challenging without being gimmicky and tough without being unfair. Oh, yeah, and interesting as well.

This was one of those matches where you felt that without your careless mistakes, you might have done pretty well. I certainly felt that way. And while the overall winner is thinking he was slow here or there, he shot with fewer mistakes than any of the wanna-be’s and took home the title once again. Congratulations to  Read more…

January 2019 Poplarville pistol match results

January 13, 2019 Leave a comment

Dawson PrecisionThe first match of the new year was a bit out of the ordinary, at least as far as match content goes. Sure, the weather was flaky (used to that) and the road dicey (used to that), but the stages were anything but “used to that.” As many of you know, we shoot 3-Gun the Sunday before Pistol and last week, we had some pretty fun stages with multiple guns, and I thought that shooting them with just a pistol would be more fun, too. So, with a few minor changes (like replacing clay pigeons with steel plates), we had some big-time field courses.

A bit of rain yesterday afternoon made the hill road a little slick this morning, but almost everybody was able to get up without help. It wasn’t a perfect day for shooting but we still had 34 hearty souls come out for what may become an annual match format. It was cool and breezy all day and it made it hard to get warm. But January often isn’t our best weather, so we’ve come to expect this. Two years ago in January, it was 22 degrees and one year ago it was 24 degrees when we arrived to set up. Today’s low 40’s seemed like a heat wave, relatively speaking. But I heard more than a few wish it was August.

Five stages certainly isn’t unusual for this match, but field courses with between 43 and 48 rounds each is. Keep in mind, these came from a 3-gun match where rifles and shotguns are the norm, along side the pistol. I warned the shooters to leave the Single Stack and Production rigs at home and some heeded the call, but others still gave it the old college try. I think all the mags were eventually found, but they were everywhere!

While the PCC shooters seemed to have an advantage with the ability to shoot entire stages without reloading, it was actually an Open shooter who took first Overall. With his first match win at Poplarville,  Read more…

January 2019 Poplarville 3-Gun match results

With the New Year and January, one thing is certain. The weather is either really great or really miserable. We lucked out and got the great weather. It was the nicest day I can remember shooting anywhere in a very long time. It was crisp at 6:45 AM but by the time the match started, it was short sleeve weather. The Sun was out, the humidity gone and the temperature was perfect. We even had a really good turnout for a 3-gun match. The past two matches had just 11 shooters each, but the nice weather brought out a handful more, and 18 folks got to enjoy some just fun stages. There weren’t any super long rifle shots, and minimal shotgun reloading, but lots of challenges for everyone to solve. The long-ish range stuff still gets people who don’t seem to have their rifles dialed in at distance, but those who did were able to put some space between themselves and the quantity instead of quality shooters.

Although the results are not surprising for the overall winner, the rest of the field was a mixed bag. On top once again was  Read more…

Level II match in Hattiesburg in 2019, Yes or No?

January 1, 2019 4 comments

Would you be interested in a Level II match at the Brothers-N-Arms range in Hattiesburg, MS on Sept. 27-29, 2019 (fifth weekend in September)? The match would have at least 10 stages and could have as many as 12-13. All USPSA divisions would be represented. We are just gauging interest in this match right now. Cost would be in line with other level II matches in this area. Shooting schedules and other details are not yet finalized. The only major match scheduled for this same weekend is the 2019 USPSA “Hicap” Nationals Carry Optics and Limited division match in Utah.

Would you be willing to work this match as an RO and get to shoot the match for free?
