January 2017 Poplarville pistol match results

January 8, 2017 Leave a comment

Dawson PrecisionAlthough the potential was there for an epic turnout, in the end, we had 23 shooters who were brave (foolish?) enough to come out on a rare sub-freezing Mississippi morning. Had the weather been a bit warmer, we would have had well in excess of 40 shooters. The group that did show had a great match. We skipped the classifier today, because no one wanted to have their classifier score affected by the cold weather. It was 22° when we arrived to set things up, but by 10 AM (delayed match start time), it had warmed to a pleasant 35° or so. With the Sun out and the breeze at bay, it was actually pretty nice. It’s funny to see the different dress for the shooters, with some in just a long sleeve (or even short sleeve) shirt, and others with multiple layers and gloves. While we sympathize with those who did sign up but later bailed, you still missed a great match. Even though we started a hour later than normal because of the cold, we were still done before 12:30.

The four stages today were challenging enough for some, as the scores show. Wayne set up a run and shoot stage with targets hiding in the woods on both sides of the road, and it definitely separated the men from the boys. More than half of the shooters found one or more Mikes there. This kind of stage is something that most ranges can’t do, so we like to throw this out once and a while. The rest of the stages were balanced between a super high hit factor potential stage where the open guys ruled, a quasi-standards forced mag change stand and shoot stage, and a new take on the dumpy house on the left side of the range.

When the score were all synced, the winner was  Read more…

NOTE – The earlier update indicated tomorrow’s match was 3-gun but it is really pistol. Sorry for the confusion.

The match is still on for Sunday. The road is passable, but avoid the ruts. We are delaying the match start time until 10 AM to let it warm up a little. We expect a big crowd so parking will be challenging for those arriving late. Sign up online if you plan to attend. Just click the Register button below. If you are already registered and cannot attend, please withdraw using your online registration page.

BPSA December 2016 Rimfire Results!

December 31, 2016 Leave a comment

The weatherman turned out to be right today and the pending rain held off this morning to give the 41 shooters who turned out for the BPSA Rimfire Challenge a chance to run the four stages and be wrapped up by noon before the rain showed up. Also really excited to see 12 of those entries were junior shooters.

Now onto the action:

Stage 1 was a fast paced tight array with three 18×24 plates across at 8 yards, with a 10 and 12 inch plate on the second level at 13 yards. Bryant Willett broke the sound barrier here with a 7.83 run in open rifle, and Blayne Dupuy was right behind him at 8.00 seconds.

Stage 2 was six plates straight across at 9 yards deep, alternating between 12 inch plate and 18×24 square with the stop plate in the middle. Stage winner was Bryce Dupuy with a 10.18 open rifle run and his brother Blayne right behind him with his limited rifle at 10.27 seconds.

Stage 3 was an “M” shaped array with two 10 inch, two 12 inch, and a 18×24 square. The killer B’s ran the table on this one with Bryant Willett taking the stage win at 11.36, with Blayne and Bruce Dupuy right behind at 12.04 and 12.40.

Stage 4 had two 10 inch plates at 10 yards to the left, and 18×24 square up the middle, and two 12 inch plates to the right, one of them being the stop plate at 16 yards. Bryant Willett won the stage here, having the only sub-12 second time and doing it twice, once with open pistol and once with open rifle.

Final results:

Limited Pistol – Blayne Dupuy
Limited Rifle – Blayne Dupuy
Open Pistol – Bryant Willett
Open Rifle – Bryant Willett

BPSA December 2016 3-gun Results!

December 17, 2016 Leave a comment

We had great weather and a great turnout for this month’s 3-gun match with 24 shooters. We had several new shooters and a few seasoned ones that are new to the range.

Stage 1 was on the rifle range and used all three guns, and got your heart rate up a little before having to engage the rifle steel from a barricade. Several shooters chose to engage left handed from the barricade while many others chose to contort their bodies into a position they could still shoot strong side. Kevin Leonhardt took the stage win with 42 seconds, Wade Wilson was right behind him at 43 seconds, Ivan Deroche set the pace for the limited shooters at 47 seconds.

Stage 2 was a short, technical stand and deliver that had shooters choosing their two guns and forced some mandatory reloads. A surprising number of folks chose the rifle for paper, thinking they could reload it faster than pistol, and it just didn’t seem to work out for them. Hank Coates took the stage win with a 12 second run, Kevin Leonhardt was right behind him at 14 seconds followed by Steve White with 15 seconds.

Stage 3 was another stand and deliver with an added twist of having the drop Turner and mandatory pistol reload between arrays. Jeret Howard took the stage win here at 16 seconds with Steve Mosher right behind at 17 seconds.

Stage 4 was a large field course that combined shotgun and rifle, and really separated the men from the boys as it required shotgun reloads. Hank Coates took the stage win with a 29 second run, Steve White and Joe Jones were next behind him at 33 k 34 seconds.

The overall match, tactical division winner and new sheriff in town was Hank Coates. Hank came over from Baton Rouge and brought the heat. It was his first visit to our range and we hope to see him frequently.

Limited division was again won by Jeret Howard, his third in a row. Once may be luck, twice may be coincidence, but three times is a bonafide streak. Especially considering he had to fight off a challenge from Ivan.

Open winner was Steve White, with Clayton Daigle right on his heels.
