We tied the record turnout for 3-gun, at least in the modern era, with 25 shooters actually showing up and shooting. The weather was spectacular and the stages equally as fine. The stages were reasonably balanced but none were pushovers.  All were challenging in their own way. Some figured them out and some didn’t.

The match scores were a bit delayed today because we had lots to pick up and no one waited around for the scores, so I just waited until I got home to actually combine everything. I wasn’t surprised at the results, and I don’t think anyone will be, either. On top of the heap, once again, was Read more…

April 2017 Poplarville pistol match results

Dawson PrecisionLast month, we just missed setting our all-time attendance record when we tied our best ever, at 40 shooters. Registration for this month’s match peaked at 49 and hopes ran high that we would break through that elusive mark. Anyone who runs a match knows that there are always a few no-shows, but there are also a few that don’t pre-register. You just hope that the walk-ups match the no-shows.

When we actually put the hammers down at 9 AM, there were 44 shooters competing. Needless to say, we are thrilled at the turnout, and greatly appreciative of the support from our shooters, many of whom are now members. Last year, we had 44 club members and it took about 9 months to get to that level. Today, after just one 3-gun match (last Sunday) and one USPSA pistol match, we tied that number at 44 members. There were quite a few regulars who were out today, so we are confident we will exceed last year’s member drive in the near future.

The stages were a great mix, ranging from a simple 8 round steel stage (which proved to be deceptive challenging) to a fairly long run through the famous gully, to a totally evil standards stage with turtle targets that at least 13 shooters would just as soon forget. We had a decent group of new shooters, too, and while we are always happy to have fresh faces, today was a tough first match. It gets easier. Please come back and see us again for some more traditional stages where the chances of zeroing a stages aren’t so great.

With 44 shooters, the game was on. There were several who could have won the whole match, but in the end, it was youth over experience. The overall winner and Open division winner was  Read more…

As late as Friday night at 8:30 PM, there were only 4 shooters registered for the match and it was looking a bit bleak. However, the word must have gotten out because we ended up with 18 at match time. We can certainly live with that.

The weather threatened but never actually materialized. The four stages really challenged everyone today, with only one shooter going clean for the match. They were hard, but fair, and begged you to go a little too fast, and many did. There was also an overabundance of head shots with the rifle, and this caused problems, too. However, the pace moved along well, and there wasn’t too much waiting. The gully was in play once again, and vexed many shooters with a tough slug shot at a tiny steel plate.

The match winner didn’t actually win any stages, but his consistency and lack of a “death stage” rewarded him with the victory. Congratulations go to  Read more…

March 2017 Poplarville pistol match results

Dawson PrecisionWe were SO close to setting a record today. Our previous record for match participation was set way back in April of 2010. On that day, we had 40 shooters and today, we had… 40 shooters. A tie is nice but one more shooter would have set the record. Oh, well. Forty is great and we really appreciate the participation on the make-up Sunday.

The stages were pretty good, and featured a quick classifier (which no one did particularly well on, with the very best score only reaching a middle A level), and an easy (really?) steel stage that will appear in the Optics Nationals next weekend. The other three stages were more traditional, with a 38 rounder that invited the shooter to re-engage multiple targets, and another stage from the upcoming Optics Nationals included 27 targets with only the heads exposed that required a single shot on each. The final stage featured moving and shooting with a good mix of paper and steel. The best hit factor was only 5.29, so it paid to be accurate and not too slow.

There were two unfortunate DQ’s today, both for accidental discharges while reloading. It’s a good reminder to make sure your finger is out of the trigger guard when reloading. It can happen to anyone when the finger gets in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now, for the good news (for one person). The match today was runaway for the overall match winner and Limited division winner. With a commanding lead of almost 14%,  Read more…

The turnout this month was down from last month’s match, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t a lot of jostling for the big trophy. Thirteen shooters shot four stages of 3-gun today under ideal conditions. It was high 60’s to the very low 70’s much of the day, with overcast skies keeping the shooters comfortable. The stages were a bit more balanced this month and we finished at a respectable 1 PM.

The focus this month was on the shotgun, which was used on all four stages. Three of those stages required at least one reload and that always tests the shooter’s abilities that don’t often get a lot of practice. Rifle also caused some issues with both long shots on seemingly small steel targets and some awkward head shots at very close range.

Only one shooter managed to go penalty free today, and not surprisingly, he won. Congratulations go to  Read more…
