May 2017 Poplarville pistol match results
Mother’s Day is usually a light match for us. For the past 7 years, the May match has averaged just 17 shooters. Today was a reflection of the renewed interest in the Poplarville club over the past year or so, and we saw 37 shooters competing. Quite a few were shooting a different division than they normally do. Most of those were practicing for the upcoming Mississippi State Limited 10/PCC/Carry Optics Championship match in Biloxi in two weeks. But everyone had a great time!
We shot just 5 stages today, so we could all get home early. The stages were supposed to be quick and easy, but a couple of them turned out to be a bit more challenging that expected. Those regular Open/Limited shooters practicing for the L10 match found that reloading all the time isn’t exactly fun or even easy. When shooting Open or Limited, one reload is the norm for most stages. Today, having to reload up to 4 times was a great test for what may come. It also pointed out just how little practice we get doing this on the clock. Shooters, you are welcome!
Ok, let’s move on to why you’re all here. Today’s match winner is no stranger to the top spot. However, he did it the hard way today. The overall winner and Limited 10 winner was Gerwin Henn, who didn’t seem to be bothered by all that reloading. Was anyone counting his rounds? Even with just 10 rounds per mag, he won convincingly by more than 8% over Charlie Black, who took the Open win. Bill Mahley won PCC, while Thomas Arthur won Limited. Team Dupuy took the top spots in Production (Bryce) and Carry Optics (Blayne).
A special thanks goes out to the junior shooters who were with us today. We had four in that category, with two young ladies joining the boys. These shooters are the future of our sport. Let’s do everything we can to encourage them.
We also had the pleasure of hosting two more non-junior ladies at the match, in addition to the juniors. That’s more women than we have hosted in memorable history in one match.
And, finally, a huge round of thanks goes to everyone who was able to help get things torn down and put up. This was the best help we have ever had!
