Once again, a nice day was missed by many of the regulars. There were only 11 shooters today, but they enjoyed some interesting, and different stages. It’s tough coming up with something different each month, but somehow, it seems to work every time. There was something for everybody on at least one of their stages. The weather also cooperated and made for a great day, environmentally. The cloud cover kept the temperature at bay and it was kind of Goldilocks all day long (not to hot, not too cold, …).

With Kevin shooting the Voodoo on the Bayou 3-Gun match, the top spot was just waiting for a new face. The face that actually showed up wasn’t exactly new to the winner’s circle, but he hasn’t been there too much recently. Back on top of the heap with a consistent performance all day was  Read more…

Dawson PrecisionThe weather was more fall-ish than it has been in a long, long time, but it did get just a bit warm in the Sun. That didn’t stop the 40 shooters who came out today from enjoying the six stages of sheer joy that we put together. OK, it wasn’t that joyous for everyone, but with Nationals starting next Saturday, the nine competitors from today’s match going to Nationals got some final match level practice in. Nationals is hard, period. Today, we had some stages that were even tougher than planned, so it worked out. We now have this week to practice on those weaknesses.

There was lots of hard cover and no-shoots all over the place. Only one stage had wide open targets with no danger (other than the ever present Mike), other than going too fast. Two shooters managed to have just one Mike for the whole match, while the rest of us kept going ka-ching! all over the place. There were even a few comments along the lines of this being our toughest match ever! Maybe so, but it didn’t start out to be that way. Sometimes, you set up a stage and think, “this won’t be too bad” but you end up wrong, dead wrong. I was told stage 6 should have been named “Thanks A LOT!”

When all the crying was done, there was a winner*. The overall winner* and Open title* goes to  Read more…

The fall 3-gun season finally got back in action at Poplarville today with a great match. Unfortunately, it was only enjoyed by a small turnout. We aren’t quite sure where some of the regulars were, but they missed some really challenging stages. The weather was still on the hot side, especially for October. But cloud cover and occasional breezes made it a bit more bearable at times.

The four stages really tested the full range of skills, and plenty of us found out where our weaknesses are. There were some challenging (for some) really long rifle shots, the little rifle auto-poppers bedeviled some even at reasonable distances, there were lots of makeups on shotgun plates that weren’t that hard, and even some pistol no-shoots just 5 yards sucked in way too many shots. Oh, well. That’s what it’s all about. Test your skills and see who has mastered them.

That question was answered quite definitively by the end of the match. The overall winner and Scoped Tactical champion was consistent enough to win all 4 stages today, and usually by a big margin. With a convincing 24% lead over second place,  Read more…

September 2018 Poplarville pistol match results

Dawson PrecisionEven a “hurricane” earlier in the week couldn’t kill this match and we shot under fair skies and on a dry range. While it was warm (hot, maybe?), there was a breeze most of the morning and it really wasn’t too bad, weather-wise. A total of 44 shooters made it out to be challenged by 5 tough stages, and most found it deceptively difficult. Nothing looked too hard at first glance, but there were only 3 shooters with a no Mike or No-shoot day so that pretty much says it all.

Probably the worst peril we faced today was not the weather, but the love bugs. It’s that time of year again and they were EVERYWHERE! Hopefully, no one inhaled a mating pair while shooting.

OK, so let’s get to the scores. That’s what we all want to know. Since it was John Nguyen’s birthday yesterday, he took the day off today and that left some room at the top for a new face. The overall winner for today came from the Limited ranks, and not the usual Open division. Congratulations to  Read more…
