February 2017 Poplarville pistol match results **UPDATE**

February 12, 2017 1 comment

Dawson PrecisionThere is a minor change to the scores posted earlier. It was discovered that Roger Henn was scored in minor instead of major. When this was corrected, he jumped from 7th to third. There is no change to the division winners but a small group of people moved down one position. The updated scores are on Practiscore and USPSA now.

Dawson PrecisionI’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. What a difference a month makes. In January, it was 22 degrees in the morning, and today it was 72 degrees. I think everyone preferred 72…

We had a near record turnout today with 36 shooters enjoying the unseasonably warm February day to get in a little shooting. There were 6 stages, which seemed to challenge people more than I expected. We had three 30+ rounders, two speed shoots where many got tripped up and a tricky 6 round classifier. If you hit your draw and first shots there, you scored well. If not, then it likely won’t count against you! The only downside to the day was three DQs. They happen but we always hate to see them.

The match moved along at a great pace with the first squad finishing around 11:30 and the last was done before Noon. Once again, we had GREAT help getting everything picked up. Your match staff really appreciates it. Please also thank Tom and Bob for their help in designed stages and setting up. I keep telling you, they are good for something!

When the dust settled, the overall winner shot more consistently than everyone else. With a large flock of open shooters, it is a tad surprising to see the overall winner come from Limited, but when you’re hot, you’re hot. Congratulations to  Read more…

After two months of rainouts, we finally got some great weather for 3-gun. It was unexpected for February but certainly welcome. The stages were challenging, to say the least. We had a great turnout, with 22 shooters trying to pace themselves over the four stages of fire. With such tough stages, we didn’t actually fire the last shot until almost 3:30 PM, and that made for a looooooog day!

While stages 1 and 2 were reasonably normal and were negotiated by most shooters with just double digit times, only 2 shooters were under 100 seconds (raw) for stage 3. This one proved exceptionally challenging, with only 6 shooters going penalty free. Stage 4 was in the gully and the weather was great for it, but it was still difficult. Although only two guns were shot, the rifle part required a minimum of 49 shots for those double-tapping the paper and one solitary steel plate. The run was from the beginning to the end with targets along the whole way. The times were quicker than stage 3, but it required significantly more adrenaline.  This was the one stage that just wasn’t competitive. Justin managed to literally run away from the field with a time of just over 50 seconds, with second place 14 seconds behind.

That kind of performance led to yet another win for  Read more…

Dawson PrecisionAlthough the potential was there for an epic turnout, in the end, we had 23 shooters who were brave (foolish?) enough to come out on a rare sub-freezing Mississippi morning. Had the weather been a bit warmer, we would have had well in excess of 40 shooters. The group that did show had a great match. We skipped the classifier today, because no one wanted to have their classifier score affected by the cold weather. It was 22° when we arrived to set things up, but by 10 AM (delayed match start time), it had warmed to a pleasant 35° or so. With the Sun out and the breeze at bay, it was actually pretty nice. It’s funny to see the different dress for the shooters, with some in just a long sleeve (or even short sleeve) shirt, and others with multiple layers and gloves. While we sympathize with those who did sign up but later bailed, you still missed a great match. Even though we started a hour later than normal because of the cold, we were still done before 12:30.

The four stages today were challenging enough for some, as the scores show. Wayne set up a run and shoot stage with targets hiding in the woods on both sides of the road, and it definitely separated the men from the boys. More than half of the shooters found one or more Mikes there. This kind of stage is something that most ranges can’t do, so we like to throw this out once and a while. The rest of the stages were balanced between a super high hit factor potential stage where the open guys ruled, a quasi-standards forced mag change stand and shoot stage, and a new take on the dumpy house on the left side of the range.

When the score were all synced, the winner was  Read more…

NOTE – The earlier update indicated tomorrow’s match was 3-gun but it is really pistol. Sorry for the confusion.

The match is still on for Sunday. The road is passable, but avoid the ruts. We are delaying the match start time until 10 AM to let it warm up a little. We expect a big crowd so parking will be challenging for those arriving late. Sign up online if you plan to attend. Just click the Register button below.
