January 2019 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

As I sit down to write this, the Sun is shining, the temperature is moderate and it appears to be a very nice afternoon. My only question is, where the heck was this weather this morning?! We should be thankful it wasn’t raining, and it wasn’t below freezing, but for the entire match, it was very cool and overcast and it wasn’t one of those days you relish being outside. It tried to warm up during the match, but it never quite got there. The Sun tried to break through, but it never did. I suppose it could have been worse, so I’ll quit complaining now.

It was a fun match today, with relative low round count stages and an inversely high level of difficulty. How hard, you ask? Well, the overall match winner was the only one to shoot the match clean (no Mikes or No-shoots). If fact, only two shooters had no Mikes for the whole match. There were no scores showing a hit factor of 10 or higher, and most were significantly below that mark (i.e. no hoser stages today) . It was a lot of shoot, move, shoot, move, and so on. The stages were challenging without being gimmicky and tough without being unfair. Oh, yeah, and interesting as well.

This was one of those matches where you felt that without your careless mistakes, you might have done pretty well. I certainly felt that way. And while the overall winner is thinking he was slow here or there, he shot with fewer mistakes than any of the wanna-be’s and took home the title once again. Congratulations to  Read more…

December 2018 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

For the last match of the year and just two days before Christmas, we had a great turnout. A total of 46 shooters closed out the first full year for the Deep South Shooters Association with a bang, both figuratively and literally. The five stages pushed everyone to and sometimes beyond their capabilities. A couple of regulars stepped out of their comfort zone and strapped on a different division, just for a change. And we found out that it doesn’t matter a whole lot which gun you shoot for the good ones. The weather was also just about perfect with mostly overcast skies, and very mild temperatures the entire morning.

The top spot on the podium wasn’t much in doubt throughout the day, so it comes with little surprise that  Read more…

October 2018 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

For a change, the weather was NOT threatening, nor was it too hot. It turned out to be a great day, weather-wise. This seemed to bring everyone out to play. In addition, Limited division was up for grabs as the three local Limited shooters who normally vie for top spot were all at Limited Nationals this weekend.

Thanks to the 2018 USPSA Optics Nationals experience that Roger Henn, George Miller and Bill Jackson gained in Frostproof, FL this past weekend, 68 shooters were treated to some of the stages they shot there. Stage 1, the “next-year” classifier proved to be as difficult as it did at Nationals. You just can’t miss fast enough to score well, even though many tried. The PCC guys ruled this stage. Stages 4 and 5 were as close to the Nationals versions as we could make them, and they performed similarly to the Nationals. They were challenging, but fair. A good test of your basic skills. The rest of the new classifiers coming won’t be any easier than stage 1, so get ready!

With the big turnout, the match moved along pretty well. With the nice weather, it made for a pleasant morning, as long as you were shooting well. Heck, it was still nice even with a miss here or there! But there is always one person who seems to get it all together. Today that person was  Read more…

September 2018 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

The threat of rain seemed to scare off a bunch of people today (38 total shooters, down from 56 at the peak of registration), and it’s too bad because we had a quick but challenging match today. Only one pistol shooter managed to shoot clean (way to go, Gerald!). We shot 3 classifiers in addition to 2 regular field stages, with the thought being we would get rain around the middle of the match, and we wanted to try to move things along to head that off. It turned out the weather man was full of baloney today, because we were never even threatened by rain.

The classifiers were challenging in their own right. One featured a bit of everything with 3 strings that included 3 draws, two mag changes and strong hand and weak hand shooting at a mix of open and partial Classic targets. Another required little to no aiming, but focused on how rapidly you could squeeze the trigger 5 times in a row. The field courses featured a good mix of partials with a few open targets thrown in to make you change gears often.

When the scores were finally synced, there was a new face at the top of the heap. Congratulations to  Read more…

August 2018 Biloxi (DSSA) pistol match results

We hoped we could get the match in without weather interruptions, but that didn’t happen. Two brief but intense rain showers disrupted the match around the 4th and 5th stages but they didn’t mess things up too much. They lasted only a few minutes and the targets made it through reasonably well. But that couldn’t put a damper on the great shooting that was on display today.

A total of 61 competitors faced off on 5 challenging stages. There were turtle targets in abundance and plenty of hard cover and no shoots lurking about. Strong hand only and weak hand only were tested on the classifier, as well. There wasn’t much room to hose today. In fact, only one shooter in the entire match got all his hits and had zero no-shoots or mikes (even the no-penalty variety). Way to go, Scott! But it took flat-out speed to win today.
