SMPSA Going Forward in 2020

Today, I am announcing my retirement as Match Producer/Director and President of the South Mississippi Practical Shooting Association (or as you may know it, the Poplarville club). This will be effective May 11, 2020. That is the day after the May USPSA pistol match.

I am not retiring from shooting, just from producing matches. I will remain in the role of MS Section Coordinator for the foreseeable future. I have been producing matches in Poplarville since early 2008, and since 2000 at other clubs in south Mississippi. If you count USPSA and 3-Gun, the number of matches I have produced is well over 300. It has never been a thankless task and in fact, it has been the much-appreciated comments from you that has kept me going this long. However, it is a responsibility that wears on you over time. I retired from work three years ago with the promise to my wife that we would travel more. We didn’t, but she hardly ever complained. Now, it’s time to live up to that promise.

While I am certain of my own future, I cannot say the same about the future of SMPSA. I have spoken to Wayne about this and he agrees with me. If we do not find new people to take over the operation of the club by May, the USPSA pistol and 3-gun matches will come to an end. While no one wants to see this happen, it is time Wayne and I got to be just plain old shooters.

If you are interested in helping this club continue after May of 2020, then please get in touch with me and I will be glad to share what is involved in producing pistol or 3-gun matches. Between now and May though, we are committed to giving you the same fantastic matches you have come to expect over the past few years.

It has been a privilege to serve as your president and match director for so long. Your appreciation has meant the world to me. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. Thank you for your support along the way.

Really have enjoyed the 3 Gun matches.  They always fun to shoot.  I know how designing the matches is a lot of work plus hauling all the targets back and forth.  We been lucky at Magnolia with a group of us we can count on to design stages and help with set up and take down.  I had oral surgeon remove tooth yesterday and not feeling well so I can’t make match.  I try to come down on Saturdays and help with setup.

Bill, it has been a while since i have been down to shoot, but i am sorry to see you go as MD, but completely understand your reasoning. Good on your for taking time for yourself and your wife. I have always enjoyed the matches you produced and have a massive amount of respect for you for just how long you put in the work and dedication as MD. Enjoy your retirement and hope to see you soon! Thanks, Justin. I appreciate the kind words. I miss having you there to balance out Kevin, and now, Morgan, Leonhardt. They have become a dominant force just as you were when you were shooting with us.
