September 2019 Poplarville 3-Gun match results

It seemed like a whole year since we shot 3-gun at Poplarville, but it was more like 7 months. Sure, we take off June-August because of the heat, but we got rained out from March through May, too. So, it was good to be back.

The weather decided it was still summer and consequently, it was hot all day. However, the turnout was pretty good. We had 16 shooters complete the four challenging stages. Things moved along pretty well and we were done at a reasonable (for 3-gun) time. It seems the shooters enjoyed the stages as well. There was a mix of rifle targets with some paper at 3 feet and some steel at almost 250 yards, with everything in between. The pistol and shotgun parts were fun and a bit challenging but not overly difficult.

If you have followed the matches in Poplarville for the past few years, there is one name that routinely appears at the top of the results. And it was no different today, but it wasn’t who you might think. I believe this is a first for Poplarville in the 40+ years we have been shooting practical competitions. Congratulations simply doesn’t do justice to the performance Morgan Leonhardt turned in today. If you have followed her for the past few years shooting under the tutelage of her dad, Kevin, you know she has talent. Today, it was on full display as she won the overall match. Yes, a woman won the match. A 12 year old woman. That’s a first, folks. It really didn’t come as a surprise for those that have seen her progress from the early days of shooting PCC to now competing in Open. Her victory today comes with a few impressive notes, too. She didn’t win any of the stages outright but she shot well enough on every stage to win the overall match. That speaks to her ability to consistently shoot well, keep her gear running smoothly, and to manage the oppressive heat. If you haven’t seen her shoot, you are missing a really great shooter who just happens to be a pre-teen. Great job, Morgan!

I want to personally thank everyone for coming to the match today. We even had three first-time 3-gun shooters who made it through the match and seemed to have a good time. While it was quite a chore setting up this week, it was great having everything torn down and put on my truck for me. At the end of a very long, hot day, it was greatly appreciated.

Thanks Bill for another great, challenging, fun and safe match. As usual, it revealed some things I need to work on. I’m very glad I got to meet Morgan today, and even though she wasn’t in my squad, I got to see her shoot a stage. Very impressive, smooth, calm, and accurate. Congratulations Morgan. Sorry I bailed early and didn’t help with stage clean up. I’ll do better next time. Thanks for a great day.
